How Coloured Contact Lenses For Halloween Can Damage Your Eyes

January 2024 · 2 minute read

We all know the joys of putting together a spooky Halloween costume. Truth be told, we're planning on going all out. Fake blood, special effect oozing wounds, wigs, face paint and fake fangs galore, our guide to the perfect Halloween makeup ideas has us thorougly inspired. But one thing we won't be rocking this year, is scary contact lenses.

While there's no denying the lenses can elevate a look from amateur to awesome, doctors are now warning the novelty lenses could cause blindness.

Eye specialists have said that contact lenses bought online or from market stalls may not be medically approved and therefore dangerous to use.

Badrul Hussain, and eye surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, told the BBC: “Some of the cases we see, like patients sharing lenses with friends, wearing the same pair year after year well past the expiry date, and storing them in tap water, have devastating effects,” he said.

He also added that inserting a lens incorrectly could harm the eye's cornea, which is something for those who aren't regular contact users to bear in mind.

In fact, the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) warned that the lenses could result in sight loss.

Wearing fancy lenses might make you look cool for one night on Halloween but losing your sight could be a lifelong horror story.

President Brian Tompkins said: “Wearing fancy lenses might make you look cool for one night on Halloween but losing your sight could be a lifelong horror story."

“To minimise the risks of infection and ongoing eye health issues, it is essential that all lenses are individually prescribed by a fully qualified professional,” he added.

Hmm - maybe we'll skip the zombie eyes this year.
