While the majority of us would happily admit to keeping at least one eye on the latest fashion trends, it might surprise you to learn that some of the world's biggest celebrities - and, of course, their stylists - also like to check in on what's hot in the world of wardrobes.
Sure, they have access to the world's most high-end designers - the ones who often dictate the trends - but if you've ever seen a runway from start to finish you'll know that a single collection from any one designer often spans all manner of trends, with endless silhouettes, colours, fabrics and concepts referenced.
So what are the chances that a large number of celebrity clients will opt for the exact same trend? And what are the chances that they'll opt for it to wear to the exact same event?
Well, if the first two instalments of 2024's Awards Season is anything to go by - it's apparently a dead cert.
Several months ago - almost a year, in fact - while attending endless runways during February 2023's instalment of fashion weeks across the globe, we raised the red alert.
“People always want to know about ‘the colour of the season’,” we wrote in our autumn/winter 2023 trend report, “and while fuchsia is still having its moment thanks to the Barbie movie there's no doubt amongst fashion insiders that the real on-trend hue for AW23 is red. Not a soft red, not a ruby, a crimson or a burgundy, but good old fashioned scarlet. Wear it head-to-toe for bonus points.”
Fast forward a few months and there was no denying it… Bold red looks were appearing everywhere, from our Instagram feeds to TikTok's FYP, party season dance floors and even on your work colleague who always claimed to “hate wearing red!”.
It took over the nation, but - and this is great news if you really invested in the trend - it seems this isn't a trend we're leaving in 2023. Not if our favourite red carpet celebrities have any say in the matter, that is.
With everyone from Margot Robbie (in Balmain) and Dua Lipa (in Prada) to Florence Pugh (in Valentino), Emily Blunt (in Armani Privé), and Julianne Moore and Michelle Yeoh (both in Bottega Veneta) all championing the hue, it seems that after only the opening two events of red carpet season we already have our colour of the moment. No longer restricted to a ‘season’, we're having to dub this a ‘moment’.
How long this ‘moment’ will now last? Who knows… But we do know that we're definitely snapping up that red knit we decided against back in November in fear of the trend's hasty decline.
Here's hoping it'll finally usurp ‘Barbie pink’.
