Prince Harry has always been known as the wild one in the royal family, but it sounds like he may have taken pointers from his older brother. In a new documentary, Prince William at Thirty, royal experts claim that William was once referred to as a “daredevil” by other members of the royal family because he loved getting into trouble.
Inside William’s younger years
Prince William’s wild years apparently go all the back to when he was in the nursery. Katie Nicholl, who has covered the royal family for years, revealed that William’s nickname in the nursery was “Basher Wills” because he constantly got into fights.
Some parents also referred to William as “the basher” after witnessing his antics on the playground. When it came to his teachers, William tried to influence them by reminding everyone about his position within the ranks of the royal family.
“He was a little bit of a daredevil, he liked getting up to all sorts of mischief,” Dickie Arbiter, a former press secretary for the royal family, shared.
According to International Business Times, William’s behavior caused a great deal of concern within the royal family. Fortunately for Prince William, his bad behavior as a child never made headlines. His brother, on the other hand, was a different story.
As royal watchers will recall, Harry once dressed up in a Nazi uniform for a party and played a game of nude billiards in Las Vegas, photos of which eventually made their way online. Harry has since tamed his wild ways, mostly because he is now a married man and a father to boot.
William felt lonely in college
While William met his future wife, Kate Middleton, while attending the University of St. Andrews, his educational days were anything but normal. In his book, William and Catherine, author Andrew Morton claims that William suffered a lonely existence at St. Andrews.
His fellow classmates were reportedly too afraid to greet him in public because they did not want to be seen as social climbers. Prince William was also careful about making new friends, which resulted in an isolated time for the Duke of Cambridge.
Luckily, Middleton was there when William needed her the most. The two originally met at St. Andrews and, while they started off as friends, their relationship quickly turned romantic. But their romance wasn’t without issues. Morton claims that Prince William sometimes treated Middleton like a servant, which did not go over well.
Their problems reached a boiling point in 2004 when they briefly separated. They faced a similar situation in 2007. After working through their differences, William and Middleton tied the knot in 2011 and share three children together.
Prince Harry and Prince William face trouble
Although William grew out of his wild years fairly quickly, Harry continued to act out until relatively recently. His questionable behavior, in fact, is what led to his first rift with William.
Inside sources say that Harry could not stand how William always got away with things when he was constantly getting the blame. Things reportedly got so bad that Harry and William stopped speaking to each other.
To help mend their relationship, William visited Harry at Eton. Luckily, the two were able to work things out and continued to be on good terms until only recently. Insiders believe that Markle also helped tame Harry and curb his bad behavior. After all, it has been quite some time since Harry was involved in a scandal, which is pretty impressive given his history.
Prince William and Prince Harry open up about their mother’s passing
Rebellious years aside, William and Harry recently opened up about how they dealt with their mother’s tragic passing in 1997. William admitted that his mom’s passing was one of the hardest things he has had to confront in life.
He also lamented how British men are often taught to keep their emotions bottled up and believes everyone would be healthier if they were more open about their feelings.
Harry also shared some words about Princess Diana’s passing and revealed that he felt less secure after her death. He also said that hearing other people share their thoughts on losing loved ones helped him feel less alone.
Prince William has not commented on the latest documentary about his early days.
