Jennifer Lawrence Red Sparrow Photocall Gender Inequality Debate

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out after photos of her and the rest of the Red Sparrow cast sparked a huge debate about gender inequality.

The photocall images gained attention because, on a cold February day in London, Jennifer stood on a hotel rooftop in a killer Versace dress while her male castmates were totally covered, with Joel Edgerton even wearing two coats. The image begged the question, why was Jennifer, the only woman in the line-up, standing around with bare legs and shoulders, and, presumably, many, many goosebumps?

Commentators on social media pointed out how much the image jars with the recent equality movement in the film industry. After all, for too long women have been expected to compromise their comfort, dignity and health in favour of looking good for the cameras (or male producers/directors).

Others said that there was nothing wrong with the photocall – Jen can wear whatever she wants, and she looks incredible in anything. Nobody’s suggesting she was in the wrong – if this was 100% her call, then NBD.

Jennifer herself has now made a statement to clear up any speculation, and she's made it crystal clear how the situation went down.

Writing on her Facebook page, she confirmed it was entirely her decision to brave the cold:

"Wow. I don't really know where to get started on this "Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold" controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I'm going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.

This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Over-reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It's creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold THATS (sic) MY CHOICE TOO!"

It seems that in this case, people really did jump to the wrong conclusion.
