Jack and Marlon

Marlon Brando
Jack Nicholson, who had purchased the house of his late friend and neighbor Marlon Brando, sadly tells me that the house has become “derelict.” It held many memories for Jack. But it has been attacked by mold. “And getting the mold out would be difficult. It’s more than likely we will take the house down,” Nicholson said. Marlon had become a recluse in that house in his final years. During that time, Marlon had told me how adept he’d become as an artist working at his computer. It was a sad, final chapter.

Jack NicholsonNicholson is back home from a family vacation in London and the south of France. He is awaiting word from Martin Scorsese on activities upcoming with the WB release of “The Departed,” in which he stars with Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon. As for a new start, Jack reminds me that he doesn’t know when start will be set for “The Bucket List.” He costars with Morgan Freeman in the Rob Reiner-directed pic about two terminally-ill friends who have a list of things they want to do before they kick the bucket. Stay tuned.

Nicholson, his usual chipper self, said he’s cut down on cigarettes, but added, “I can’t quit smoking — it’s the only thing I’ve taught myself to do.”

When I told Jack that Heath Ledger would play the Joker in the next “Batman,” he recalled paying the role in 1989 for director Tim Burton and told me, “It was one of my favorite jobs.”
