West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre in Minehead is to open a full time gym following a £100,00 investment by Somerset Leisure Trust which manages the centre.

The centre, which is situated on the same site at the West Somerset Community College at Bircham Rd, currently shares gym facilities with students from the College and the gym is only available to members of the public for limited hours during the day. But now the new investment will mean that the centre will be able  to open its own full time gym during the day and evening.

The new gym at the centre will open in the middle of September and students from the Community College will also be able to use and enjoy their own separate gym facilities following the major refurbishment work.

The investment will also provide new cardio equipment for the gym such as treadmills, bikes and rowers as well as specialist weight lifting and body conditioning equipment.

The refurbishment at the centre will also create a new class-room which the Community College and leisure centre will use for teaching and training purposes.

The Manager of West Somerset Sports and Leisure Centre, Jayne Lethaby says that the investment is great news for gym users in the area; “ The refurbishment will mean a huge improvement to leisure services for the local community. Our members will now have access full time to their own dedicated gym with state of the art facilities while students at the College can exercise separately in the own gym. This is all part of the Trust’s ongoing commitment to promoting health and well being in the area.”
